Onrus hosted the Walker Bay Pro competition. The event aroused great interest among amateurs and professionals who watched what was happening from the shore. For the first time in the history of the sport, eyewitnesses witnessed the first IBC Women’s World Cup title being won on African soil. Athletes struggled with powerful waves, up to 6 feet high.

4 athletes reached the final of the competition: Isabela Sousa and Alexandra Rinder, Neymara Carvalho and Pamela Bowen, who is a local star in this sport. Isabela was able to easily overtake her opponent, who showed an unusually low result in the last performance, in comparison with the rest. As a result of the past clashes, the athletes demonstrated the highest class, but the champion title went to Carvalla.

The semi-finals were held among men within the framework of the junior cup. At the same time, on the waves, Braden Hewitt met with Hugo Naud. Before that, Brenden fought in skill with Aaron Gimpel, who seemed to the judges to be a weaker athlete. So far, there have been games between Jeff Hubbard and Tristan Roberts, both of whom hold world-class titles. Hubbard thus earned his best result in the course of the competition. Another semi-final match was between Alan Munoz from Chile and Iain Cambell. Several successful jerks of the second of the athletes made it possible to take the lead

In the final, two of the best representatives of surfing in the world met: Naud and Hewitt. At the competition, they clearly demonstrated why they are considered masters. To overcome the opponent, everyone demonstrated professional riding, technique, complex transitions and pirouettes. Several powerful somersaults were made.

As a result, the gold medal went to Jeff, and in the women’s part of the competition – to Isabela. The South African athlete showed not only an excellent result, but also the fact that Africa is not in vain considered a mecca for surfers from all over the world.

This week J-Bay hosted a competition for all longboard masters. In just 3 days, the whole range of conditions characteristic of this area has changed. But the main thing is that the waves were big enough for the riders to show their highest level. Let’s take a look at the day.

Day 1

On the first day, there were huge waves in the bay, reaching 10 feet, but by noon they became weaker, fitting into a reasonable 6 feet. This allowed the previously suspended competition to continue due to excessive risk.

Last year’s champion Christianson again showed good surfing, which was highly appreciated by the judges. According to the results, he took the 2nd position in the overall standings, and then a place on the podium of the 3rd round of the championship.

Riders from the Western Province got into the 3rd round: Manov Robb and Tristan Lev. The first showed a very long nose ride, which was highly appreciated by the judges. The second showed stylish turns and a nose ride, which was awarded the highest score of the day by the panel of judges.

Next, the masters played at the age of 35-45 years, among whom the local resident Michael Hill was remembered. Once again he gets a perfect score for the day thanks to his execution of deep wild carves and steady legs.

It is interesting that such competitions are considered significant events of the South African continent. This allows attracting many tourists from all over the world to the day of the riders’ performances, as it was this time.

Day 2

The next day of the competition, a strong wind began to blow from the coast. He complimented the scorching heat and waves of 2-3 feet. But more interesting was the performance of women, who on the second day of the games took to the water for the first time. This brought refinement and grace to the overall mood of the games.

Tarryn King, who is the current champion of this format, earned a hefty 7.38 points for her run. Long jumps and powerful maneuvers made her a participant in the quarterfinals, which took place the next day of the competition.

I remember Marishka Myers, who last year performed in the 4th month of pregnancy and took a significant 4th place in the overall standings. In the open division for women, she received the highest score.

The open category for men was subdued by local resident Jan Du Toit. His knowledge of the terrain and the waves of the coast helped him to perform the best series on perfect crests. As a result, he received the highest score for the entire event.

Within the framework of two groups at once (open and masters), Jonathan Rosslind played. He was marked by difficult races on the nose and protracted maneuvers. As a result, his score became one of the highest for all days of competition.

Mark Jackson showed excellent board control on a grandmaster scale. After his impressive performance, he increased the gap from the nearest rivals to 2 points, which became an insurmountable frontier for them.

Day 3

The third day of the competition was the most friendly to the athletes in terms of the prevailing conditions. Along the cape was a series of low 2-foot ridges, which perfectly suited the junior division, which competed in the final stage.

Nickerk excelled, earning an impressive 9.33, which confirmed his seven in the overall standings. Thus, the rider has earned a place in the final meeting, which will be held between underage athletes. In the same age category among girls, Loftus and Rosslind showed excellent style. They also won and will participate in the final.

Among the senior athletes, Michelle Van Kempen managed to show an excellent performance, which was easy for Hang Tens and Hang Five, between which she easily balanced.

In the final round of the open division, Jan Du Toit went up against Sam Christianson. The first rider showed flair, which allowed him to accurately select the time between maneuvers and work out bunch after bunch. Despite the strong wind, all landings on board were given without complications. Both riders advanced to the quarter-finals.

Coronation of Champions https://fabiogiacomini.co.za/coronation-of-champions/ https://fabiogiacomini.co.za/coronation-of-champions/#respond Wed, 08 Jun 2022 14:13:11 +0000 https://fabiogiacomini.co.za/?p=10 Almost ideal surfer conditions met the athletes on the coast of South Africa in the final races. The longboarding competition was held by Ryd Brand and was only made possible by the efforts of Surfing South Africa. 3-4-foot combs were raised in front of the athletes, on which they demonstrated their own professionalism.

In the junior class, Angelica Rosslind, who was not yet 16, performed. The girl had a priority right to race, so she waited for the best waves and worked with her favorite style, which had already become branded and recognizable. Her overall result is 12.9.

Jackson Ribbink won the similar category among juniors, who showed free turns with hard blows with his nose on the water. In total, he was able to score 13.76 points for his demonstration.

Coronation of Champions

Hugh Thompson, who plays in the legendary division, confidently took the lead. It is worth noting that the athlete is engaged in the production of high-quality boards. Showing a combination of sharp maneuvers and jumps with classics, the rider received 16.76, and the performance style earned him the title of “surfer surfer”.

In the category of older athletes (from 50 and older), Kay Holt won with her energetic youth style. Confident maneuvers on the waves, standing on the nose of the board brought her the title of champion. Noteworthy were the performances of Van Kempen, which were highly appreciated by the judges all week.

In the men’s category, Craig Cuff stood out, showing the highest score for a single race in the final heat – 9.83. He received bronze among the Open Mens, and also won the title of the best surfer.

Boys before coming of age lost titles and places to Justin Van Niekerk. In a similar women’s group, Hannah Pretorius won, diluting her style with nose riding along the most difficult parts of the ridges.

The performance of Sam Christianson, who saddled the highest ridges, put an end to this day of competition. The athlete performed several maneuvers at the highest level and put an end to the nose riding. This made him the winner of the competition that year.

Congratulations to the champions!
